Bryant Berryman, 37, is facing a host of charges following an incident that played out after allegedly causing a crash that totaled two vehicles.
At approximately 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported hit-and-run crash at Staffordboro Boulevard and Woodstream Boulevard, authorities said, where arriving deputies found a Nissan and a Volkswagen totaled from a collision. No major injuries were reported.
The driver of the Volkswagen stayed at the scene, but the Nissan driver was nowhere in sight, officials said. Witnesses reported that the Nissan driver jumped out of the driver’s side window and bolted toward Stafford Market Place immediately after the crash, according to officials.
Deputies began searching the area and came across a man and a woman walking nearby.
The man matched the description of the suspect, and the woman was visibly upset about her vehicle. When questioned, the man tried to shift the blame, claiming the woman was driving. Investigators quickly determined that Berryman was lying.
When deputies attempted to identify him, the man unleashed a stream of profanities, refused to cooperate, and resisted detainment. After several warnings, Vaughn administered OC spray, which prompted the man’s compliance, officials said.
The suspect was identified as Berryman, who was found to have a revoked driver’s license.
Berryman received medical attention from Fire and Rescue personnel already on scene before being booked; however, Berryman’s defiance didn’t end there. Deputies reported that he resisted getting into the patrol cruiser until the prospect of a second dose of OC spray was mentioned.
At that point, Berryman decided to cooperate and was charged with felony hit and run, obstruction of justice, and driving while revoked. He was taken to Rappahannock Regional Jail, where he remains pending a bond hearing. The incident led to lengthy road closures on Staffordboro Boulevard.
